Floating Down the Amazon....

They say that He who does not not climb Mount Fuji once in his life is a Fool.  They also say that He who climbs Mount Fuji twice is a fool. I am certain that the same can be said about sailing down the Amazon River. And this, dear reader, makes me a fool.  Not once but twice within a year, I traveled from the headwaters of the Amazon (in Ecuador and Peru) all the way to the Atlantic in Brazil.  This entails weeks of jungle rot and sweat and hammocks and monotony that makes you hallucinate.  It is also sort of wonderful.  The first time I went down the river in 2004 I was with my lovely friend Judy. Most of my writing from this trip is contemplative and appreciative.  The second time (in 2005) I was with Dex (famous Dex who I hitchhiked from Ecuador to New York with) and thus most of my writing is more about my staggering disbelief of the mischief he stumbles into at every turn.

Enjoy!
